The Moth

As I am working on larger pieces I am finding it necessary to make a "test" piece. This is from the "Keyhole" quilt I am working on. I looked at many escutcheons and took this idea for my final work. I wanted to highlight the stitching with paint. I needed to see how it would work, were is the light coming from, how far does the light wrap the details, etc. There is an application of a light gray acrylic paint and then a pure white right at the stitching line. As I wanted to either sell this little gem or send it to The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative it needed something more. I liked the idea of something that loves fabric as much as I do...a moth. So I found a photograph for inspiration, drew him/her on a piece of black fabric, did a little painting, colored pencil, ink...then cut him/her out and fused it to the top with black Mistryfuse (love that stuff). I still needed to bind the quilt but I wanted to get it on the site. So, if I don't get back this week. Y'all have a good one!

Asian Scroll

This art quilt was inspired form the fan quilt. While doing research for ideas for the “Fan” I was looking at scrolls and was fascinated with the proportion of borders the Japanese use on scrolls. The distribution of fabrics and images is very different. I also remembered a flower I saw on a quilting show which featured a quilter who did fabric origami. A little more research and I found the pattern for the flower. The center panel is a original print of a fish in a pond while raining. I still have to add beads to the center of the flowers but even without the beads I love the piece. It is for sale, $150.00 on Etsy when I get it finished. If you want it, let me know...it will give me the push to finish and get it posted. Quilt is ready to hang with a dowel pocket and dowel sew in. "Asian Scroll" 12.75" x 68.75".

The Fan Quilt

The quilt to the right was a challenge from a fan who was following me on my old web site. She is a very sweet woman for Toronto, Canada. She described herself as a Asian woman trapped in a white girls body. So I knew when it came time to do her quilt it had to be Asian. All the fabrics are from my stash, I love Asian fabrics, themes and motifs. The quilt is based on a fan, the alternation of black is to show a fold or give you some idea of a shadow. I love the way color works with black however I have recently been looking how bright colored fabrics look on a field of white. "Fan" 36" x 18".

Got a new one!

Welcome to my new FREE blog. I will try to get up all the mini quilts form my quilt-a-day project I did last year. OK it only lasted 30 days but I learned a lot in those 30 days. I am working on two larger art quilts now, one is on a Southwestern Indian basket theme and the other is a key hole idea I have been playing with that I might take further. As I am making the larger pieces I am also making a smaller test pieces. These test pieces are being sent to The Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) - Raising Awareness & Funding Research Through Art you can read more at : http://www.alzquilts.org/paq.html#ixzz1DBRsdW8Y I have watched the work they have been doing over the past 6-7 years at the IQF Houston and I have a friend who works for them and it is a good cause. I will also be posting a few pieces for sale on Etsy.com, so please buy a quilt or art quilt and help me pay my bills.
